LINZ location vision and outcome

Our 10-year vision is 'The power of where drives New Zealand’s success'. Location-related decisions lie at the heart of New Zealand’s economic, social, environmental and cultural prosperity.

Under this vision, LINZ has a framework of outcomes and priorities that sharpen our focus on the things that matter most for New Zealand, and guide where we put our effort and resources.

The location outcome we seek to achieve is:

High-value geographic and property information
Geographic and property information are used effectively to deliver value for New Zealand.

Under this outcome, our priorities for the next 1-5 years are:

  • Data and use – identifying key datasets, opening these up for public access nad building capability to effectively use data
  • Connecting data – linking, integrating and aggregating
  • Reporting – on nationally important geographic and property information.

Within this outcome, we pay particular attention to three cross-cutting ‘key challenges’ for New Zealand where LINZ can make a significant difference:

  • better management of fresh water
  • supporting resilience and climate change efforts
  • managing urban areas.

Our location datasets

We manage and maintain many of New Zealand’s key geographic and property datasets such as positioning,  imagery, elevation depth, addresses, property titles and boundaries.

LINZ is in a unique position because the teams that manage these datasets are housed within one organisation. These include New Zealand’s national mapping agency, hydrographic authority and geodetic survey office. This enables us to think more broadly about the future of geographic and property information, coordinate investment in new technologies and leverage our combined expertise.

By focusing on these challenges and working with stakeholders within these systems, we drive the delivery of open, accessible, connected, and usable geographic and property information.

Our work programme includes:

  • working with current and potential users of geographic and property data to understand their needs
  • improving data and information that is critical to our core activities and the three challenges facing New Zealand: fresh water management; resilience and climate change; and managing urban areas
  • helping other organisations to build their capability to use geographic and property information
  • making it easy to access our information.

The principles we work to

We champion key principles first established in 2007 in the New Zealand Geospatial Strategy. We ensure that geographic and property data is:

  • collected once to agreed standards to enable use by many
  • easy to discover and access
  • easy to understand, integrate, interpret, and use
  • readily available and not unduly restricted
  • appropriately preserved and protected.
