Geospatial Internships

Internships are one way that organisations can help GIS students enter New Zealand’s geospatial industry.

One of the recommendations from the July 2016 University of Victoria report 'Graduate pathways: Support for Young Geospatial Professional in New Zealand' is "Create a repository of entry pathway opportunities (for example, internships, graduate development programmes, part time or short term opportunities) for students."

The Department of Conservation, Environment Canterbury, Eagle Technology and Interpret have kindly supplied the Geospatial Capability Committee with copies of their Geospatial/GIS Intern Job Descriptions that other organisations can use as example templates to develop their own Geospatial/GIS Intern Job Description.

Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) has offered paid geospatial internships previously over the Summer tertiary break. Ian Harrison, LINZ Senior Spatial Analyst, says that “Internships are a great way for us to progress useful work that we otherwise may not have the resources to do. As well as giving the Interns work experience, we’ve found their fresh perspectives and the skills they bring are of real value to LINZ.”

The following industry people are available if you'd like first-hand feedback about the hiring and managing of geospatial interns:
