In promoting open government information and data, the Programme is a key tool in helping New Zealand maintain its strong history of open and transparent government.

The collaborative New Zealand Open Government Information and Data Programme makes public government-held  information more widely available for people, communities, and businesses to re-use

Evidence suggests that opening up government information for re-use has considerable and widespread benefits to government, industry and the public. At the same time, technological and cultural advances also make it cheaper and easier to reuse this data and information.

The Programme is a collaboration involving users, the open data community, civil society, and government agencies (the data suppliers). It provides guidance and advice to support agencies to manage and release their data and information for reuse. The programme is led by the:

  • Open Government Data Chief Executives Governance Group,
  • Open Government Data Steering Group; Jan Pierce, LINZ DCE is a member of this group.

The priority for open and transparent government

In August 2011, the Government committed to actively release high value public data in New Zealand through the Declaration on Open and Transparent Government (see link below). The Government also released the New Zealand Data and Information Management Principles (see link below). These principles state that data and information must be open, trusted and authoritative, well managed, readily available, without charge where possible, and reusable. Personal and classified information must be protected.
