LINZ will transfer Crown-owned red zone land in the Port Hills to Christchurch City Council in late May 2021, as part of the 2019 Global Settlement, after carefully managing it since 2015.

We’re focused on leaving the land as secure and well-maintained as possible, with day-to-day responsibilities including maintaining vegetation, managing weeds and pests, security, pest control audits, fencing and removing rubbish.

The Crown has completed about 400 demolitions of severely earthquake-damaged properties in the Port Hills, many of which were high-risk, with the final demolition to be completed shortly.

Almost 50,000 native plants have been put in – helping to restore and enhance biodiversity – and we’ve supported around 20 short-term projects and events.
