An easement is a right agreed between a landowner and another party to use a property for a particular purpose, and can be registered against the property’s title.

We often grant easements over our land for pipelines, electricity supply transmission lines, or to establish rights of way. An easement does not confer ownership of the land – simply the right to use part of the land.

Depending on the property, we may need to consult with other parties or consider the rights of existing lessees or licensees before making a decision on the easement application. Fees and rents may be payable.

If you wish to apply for an easement over Crown land, you should contact us at crownproperty@linz.govt.nz.
