Order in Council under the Hurunui/Kaikōura Earthquakes Recovery Act 2016

The Government has made an Order which allows the Kaikoura District Council to disregard earthquake damage when it is reassessing the valuations of properties.

The Order will remain in place until the next general revaluation or 30 June 2019 (whichever comes earlier).

The Order was made because the Council has told us that it can’t accurately assess the impact of earthquake damage on values yet. More information is needed on the cost of repairing affected properties. There are also difficulties with physical access in some cases.

Importantly, the Order won’t prevent the Council from using its rating policy under the Local Government legislation to provide rates relief.

The public were invited to have their say when the Order was proposed. Consultation closed on Tuesday, 6 June 2017.

More information on the proposed Order is set out in the engagement document and the regulatory impact statement below.
