Land Information New Zealand is helping to gather essential information about the impact of the Kaikoura earthquake.
Chief Geodesist Graeme Blick says LINZ experts are surveying impacted areas to get precise information about the extent of the earth movement.
“We are working with GNS Science, and others, to understand just how this earthquake has affected the land,” says Graeme.
They will also provide us with new coordinates for the area that reflect this movement. This is essential for understanding the impact on property boundaries and is also important for rebuilding.
LINZ has also contacted Canterbury Civil Defence to determine what imagery they need for their initial response to the earthquakes. This imagery is taken from planes or from Satellite and can be used for assessing impact and for help with recovery.
“LINZ can coordinate this for them and we have already been in touch with companies that provide satellite imagery and have tasked them to gather images of the affected areas.
“Our thoughts are with those impacted by these earthquakes. We’ll continue to do everything we can to support recovery.”
