Toitū Te Whenua tertiary GIS scholarships open for applications

12 October 2021

Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand is offering tertiary scholarships to encourage students in geospatial study in 2022.

Acting Head of Location information Graeme Blick says the geographic information science (GIS) scholarships will help build New Zealand’s geospatial workforce.

“Toitū Te Whenua is very pleased to offer these scholarships to recognise the importance of high-value geographic and property information to our economy, environment and society now and into the future,” Mr Blick says.

Two scholarships - each worth up to $5000 – are available for undergraduate or postgraduate fees for GIS-related courses or research.

Toitū Te Whenua established its external tertiary GIS scholarships in 2018. Previous postgraduate recipients have researched how geospatial information can provide insights to help locate transient people during natural disasters and how new digital spatial technologies apply to mātauranga Māori. Previous undergraduate recipients have been undertaking a variety of study programmes along with GIS courses including Resource & Environmental Planning, Geography and Applied Science majoring in GIS.

Applications for this year’s scholarships are open until 14 November 2021.
