This standard defines the criteria that the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa will use when reviewing and concurring with proposals from the Department of Conservation to assign or alter official Crown protected area names.
This standard is effective from 11 May 2020.
All proposals to assign or alter Crown protected area names should be in accordance with this final standard. However, the classifications in ‘Apitihanga A’ (Appendix A) in the Māori translation of this standard must not currently be applied to Crown protected area names. The Department of Conservation is investigating using Māori classifications for reserves.
