Updated name for Manawatū-Whanganui Regional Council

In June 2018 the Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Council resolved to make a request to the New Zealand Geographic Board (the Board) to alter its region name from ‘Manawatu-Wanganui Region’ to ‘Manawatū-Whanganui Region’, which would then allow the Council to also alter its name to be consistent with the region name.  Horizons Regional Council is the trading name for the council.

The ‘Local Government (Manawatū-Whanganui Regional Council) Order 2019,’ sought authority to submit the Order in Council to the Executive Council. The Order in Council changed the name from ‘Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Council’ to ‘Manawatū-Whanganui Regional Council’ as listed in schedule 2 of the Local Government Act 2002.

Following the required statutory processes under the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008 and the Local Government Act 2002, the Cabinet Legislation Committee authorised the submission of the Order in Council to Executive Council on 10 September 2019. The change to the council name took effect from 18 October 2019.
