Updated name for Ōtorohanga District Council

Following a request from Ngāti Maniapoto iwi as part of its Treaty settlement negotiations, Te Arawhiti made a proposal to the New Zealand Geographic Board (the Board) to alter the official district name of ‘Otorohanga District’ to ‘Ōtorohanga District’. The Board dealt with the request as required by sections 16 to 20 of the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008.

The Order in Council (the order) changed the name of ‘Otorohanga District Council’ to ‘Ōtorohanga District Council’, as listed in schedule 2 of the Local Government Act 2002.

Following statutory processes under the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008 and the Local Government Act 2002, the Cabinet Legislation Committee authorised the submission of the order to Executive Council on 10 December 2019. The change to the council name took effect from 17 January 2020.
