The Government initiated a review of the Public Works Act (PWA) in June 2024 to enable public infrastructure projects. As a result of the review, a package of amendments involving land acquisition and compensation provisions was proposed.
On 5 March 2025, the Cabinet Economic Policy Committee (ECO) agreed to progress a package of legislative changes to the PWA focused on modernising land acquisition processes and compensation provisions including introducing incentive payments for landowners whose land is acquired for public works projects.
Cabinet approved the proposed amendments on 10 March 2025. The Public Works Act Amendment Bill is expected to be introduced to Parliament later this year.
