Response to the Official Information Act request for details of any applications received under the Overseas Investment Act 2005 from Microsoft, DCI Data Centers, or Amazon Web Service for the establishment of data centres in New Zealand.
The response to the request provided the following documents:
- The Overseas Investment Office’s (OIO) National Interest Assessment Report dated 18 August 2020 being the OIO’s national interest assessment of Microsoft’s significant business assets application
- The OIO’s Assessment Report dated 25 August 2020 being the OIO’s assessment of Microsoft’s business assets application.
- The OIO’s Emergency Notification Assessment Report of the transaction involving DCI Data Centers under Part 3 of the Overseas Investment Act 2005; and
- An excerpt from a spreadsheet summarising the transaction involving DCI Data Centers.
In relation to Amazon Web Service we confirmed that in November 2021, the OIO received an application from Amazon Data Services NZ Limited for the establishment of a cluster of data centres and that the application was still being processed.
