The New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa has announced recent decisions, including corrections to existing place names and validating seven Crown reserve names as official.
Corrections to existing place names
- Mangapōike River, adding a macron
- Kātiki Point Historic Reserve and Kātiki Point Wildlife Management Reserve, between Dunedin and Oamaru, adding macrons
- Stewart Creek, altered from Stewarts Creek, near Haast Pass/Tioripatea, dropping the possessive form to be consistent with nearby associated place names Stewart Falls, Stewart Knob and Stewart Crags
New official place name
- Ryan Creek, in the Remutaka Range, commemorating Daniel Frank Ryan (1883–1935) and his wife Florence Jane Ryan, née Soan (1887–1972). Daniel was the first caretaker of the Ōrongorongo River water intake scheme which transported water to Wellington

Maniapoto Claims Settlement Act 2022
The Board has fulfilled its commitment in the cultural redress of place name restoration by gazetting 12 Maniapoto treaty settlement place names and discontinuing eight Crown reserve names – listed here.
Lake Te Horonui
Minister for Land Information, Hon Damien O’Connor, has today announced the new place name, Lake Te Horonui, for the lake formed by a significant landslide between Wairoa and Gisborne in 2018.

About Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa
Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa New Zealand Geographic Board is an independent statutory body. The Board is supported and administered by Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand.
Anyone may propose a name for a geographic feature or place. The Board uses naming guidelines, standards, and international good practice for standardised, consistent, and accurate place naming, to help us make robust and enduring decisions.
The Board recognises the importance of pronunciation in te reo and macrons support both pronunciation and meaning. Therefore, the Board follows the orthographic conventions created by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (The Māori Language Commission).
If the Board doesn't agree with a proposal, it may consult on a different proposal considered more appropriate.
The Board consults with relevant agencies, local communities, stakeholders, and iwi. It researches all proposals and encourages the use of original Māori names.
Once official, place names must be used in all official documents like road signs, maps, websites and databases.
