Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa New Zealand Geographic Board announces seven new names for Auckland railway stations.
The proposals for the railway station names, some for new stations, were initiated by KiwiRail, City Rail Link Limited, and Auckland Transport and went through a public consultation process before the official names were recommended by the Board and agreed to by Minister for Land Information Damien O’Connor.
Six of the seven railway stations, two in south Auckland and four in central Auckland, were gifted by mana whenua, Chairperson Anselm Haanen said.
The seventh railway station, Drury in south Auckland, recognises the place being serviced by the new station.
“The new names will help connect the railway stations to the local history of the areas they serve,” he said.
“The use of these new names will also help to re-establish cultural connection and identity when used by the public.”
South Auckland railway stations
Three of the new stations will be constructed south of Auckland between Papakura and Pukekohe. They are now officially named Drury Railway Station, Ngākōroa Railway Station and Paerātā Railway Station.
Drury Railway Station will service the township of Drury which was named after Commander Byron Drury of the survey vessel HMS Pandora.
Ngākōroa Railway Station is named in association with a nearby stream of cultural significance and will serve the rapidly growing residential area nearby.
Paerātā Railway Station will be located close to the settlement of Paerata and recently developed Paerata Rise.
Central Auckland railway stations
The other four stations are located in central Auckland on the new City Rail Link line. They are officially named Karanga-a-Hape Railway Station, Te Waihorotiu Railway Station, Maungawhau Railway Station (formerly Mount Eden) and Waitematā Railway Station (formerly Britomart Station).
Karanga-a-Hape Railway Station is a new station which has entrances on either side of Karangahape Road. Its story relates to the call of Hape, a Tainui ancestor, at this place.
Mount Eden Station is renamed Maungawhau Railway Station, based on its association with the nearby maunga (mountain) and its whau (trees).
Te Waihorotiu Railway Station is another new station located near the SkyCity complex and Aotea Square, it is predicted to become one of the busiest railway stations in the country. The name comes from a historic stream that once flowed into Waitematā Harbour and refers to a taniwha in the waters.
Britomart Station is renamed Waitematā Railway Station to acknowledge its proximity and connection to Waitematā Harbour, including the transport links there. Waitematā is known to refer to the harbour’s flat, glassy waters resembling matā (obsidian). Another tradition is that the harbour's name reflects a visit from a Te Arawa ancestor who placed an obsidian stone in the northern part of the harbour as a talisman. The name Britomart remains for the shopping precinct and Britomart Place.
Four of the reo Māori names include macrons and hyphens, in accordance with the orthographic conventions set out by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (the Māori Langugage Commission).
The new names and their meanings will be reflected in the stations being designed by Auckland Transport, City Rail Link Limited and KiwiRail.

Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa New Zealand Geographic Board is an independent statutory body. Pou Taunaha is supported and administered by Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand.
Anyone may propose a name for a geographic feature or place. Pou Taunaha uses naming guidelines and standards and follows international good practice to help it make robust and enduring decisions.
Pou Taunaha recognises the importance of pronunciation in te reo and macrons support both pronunciation and meaning. Therefore, Pou Taunaha follows the orthographic conventions of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (Māori Language Commission).
If Pou Taunaha doesn't agree with a proposal, it may consult on a different proposal considered to be more appropriate.
Pou Taunaha consults with relevant agencies, local communities, stakeholders and iwi. It researches all proposals and encourages the use of original Māori place names.
Official place names must be used in all official documents like road signs, maps, websites, databases and publications for tourists.
