Place Names of the Ancestors, A Māori Oral History Atlas
To celebrate Māori Language Week 2018 we are sharing stories from He Korero Pūrākau Mo Ngā Taunahanahatanga a Ngā Tūpuna (Place Names of the Ancestors), A Māori Oral History Atlas, published in 1990.
These stories were previously available as a scanned pdf of the original publication however these new pages present the text in an easier-to-read format as well as highligting the beautiful artwork of the late Cliff Whiting.
Please note that the place names in these stories were correct at the time of publication but some may have been updated or changed in the time since. All of the current place names can be found in the New Zealand Gazetteer.
- Kupe - The Discoverer
- Paikea - Memories of Home
- Rākaihautū- naming the Great Lakes of Aoraki
