Land Information New Zealand’s Statement of Intent for 2010–13 outlines our plans for helping to grow the economy and improving the services we deliver to New Zealanders.

A prosperous and economically secure nation is one in which there is confidence in property rights, and Crown assets are effectively and efficiently managed. By ensuring the integrity of New Zealand’s land information systems – and realising the potential and long-term viability of those assets – people will be encouraged to invest in them. This will have long-term benefits for individual New Zealanders and our nation’s economic wellbeing.

The Statement of Intent supports the Government’s themes of Economic Transformation and National Identity by reinforcing the importance that land management and land information have in underpinning New Zealand’s economic development and national identity. To achieve this LINZ will ensure the certainty and security of property rights through sound policies, a strong regulatory framework and maintenance of land records.

This report compares currently available transformation parameters for converting between NZGD49 (New Zealand Geodetic Datum 1949) and WGS84 (World Geodetic System 1984) coordinates.

With the establishment of a new datum comes a need to transform coordinates from one datum to the other as only a small number of marks have been surveyed in terms of both datums.

The 4 September 2010 Darfield (Canterbury) earthquake resulted in up to 5 metres of lateral slip along the previously unknown Greendale Fault (Figure 1) and associated ground surface displacements of up to about 2.5 metres within the surrounding region (Quigley et al., 2010, 2012; Beavan et al., 2010). Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) requires a way to correct and update the survey system for the effects of the earthquake.

These specifications relate to the provision of geodetic control maintenance to support the geodetic programme as required by the Cadastral Survey Act 2002 sec 7(1)(a) and (b).

This report examines height datum technologies and also looks at current international practice with respect to height datum issues. It presents some wider user perspectives before looking more specifically at the physical characteristics of New Zealand and the particular problems that it faces.

This report is the response to a brief from Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) to establish the economic foundation for funding a modern geodetic system for New Zealand.

This executive summary provides an overview of the full report, RNALZ17001 - 17 August 2017, on the hydrographic risk assessment of Samoan waters. The hydrographic risk assessment was based on the Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) Hydrographic Risk Assessment Methodology, as published in Report Number 15NZ322 Issue 031. This risk assessment is part of the continuing programme of Pacific regional hydrographic risk assessments being conducted by LINZ, supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), which is intended to cover the extent of New Zealand’s area of charting responsibility.
