Discover over 200 of New Zealand’s geographic feature types through simple drawings and descriptions, with their terms in Māori and English.

This collection defines the geographic feature types used in New Zealand place names. Generally, a feature type is included as part of a place name such as Mōtītī Island. We encourage using Māori terms for Māori place names where the term is commonly known, for example, maunga, roto or motu.
