This document outlines a proposed vision and strategy for Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ, the department, or us/we) to manage Crown pastoral land in New Zealand.

Treaty settlements are contained in legislation, settlement deeds and government policy. There are requirements to be considered when Crown agencies propose to dispose of land.

The Public Works Act 1981 sets out the procedures for disposing of land that is held for a public work but is no longer required for that public work. It ensures that those who have a recognised interest in the land are given priority when the land is disposed of.

If action is required to be taken in respect of a parcel of Crown land, it is first necessary to establish what authority is needed to take the proposed action and whether the land is Crown land. This is especially important in respect of land that is not formally recorded on any public land record.

The Public Works Act 1981 sets out the requirements for the acquisition of land for government and local works. It ensures that both land owners and acquiring agencies are treated fairly by the process of land acquisition.

This amendment corrects the document 'LINZS45002: Standard for purchase, alienation, and administration of Crown land' and applies to clause 5.5.

This standard ensures that rent reviews of pastoral leases under Part 1A of the Crown Pastoral Land Act 1998 are conducted according to a fair and transparent process.
