LINZ maintains a register of land that is publicly searchable. Anyone who is concerned that the register contains information that may disclose their whereabouts and put their safety or that of their family at risk, may apply to the Registrar-General of Land to have that information withheld.

Instruments lodged for registration or noting under the Land Transfer Act 2017 must include the information prescribed for that instrument by the Land Transfer Regulations 2018.

The Land Transfer Act 2017 (the Act), regulations, and other legislation allow a caveat and other stops to be entered in the register to prevent or restrict dealings in certain circumstances.

If a non-navigable river or stream dries up (for example, because it has changed course suddenly and perceptibly), an application to bring land under the Land Transfer Act 2017 may be made.

Regulations 17(1)(a) and (3) of the Land Transfer Regulations 2018 enable applications to change or correct names to be made, and Regulation 17(4) empowers the Registrar-General of Land to change or correct names in the Register if satisfied the name has changed.

A signatory or their practitioner must certify certain matters before a paper instrument can be lodged. Obligations apply to witnesses, certifiers, and LINZ staff upon receiving paper instruments by post and prior to registering them. This is to safeguard against fraud in conveyancing transactions.
