By law, ships need to carry official charts and navigation publications needed for their voyage - this includes the Almanac, an annual publication that is updated fortnightly through our Notices to Mariners.

Toitū Te Whenua has carried out in-depth assessments of New Zealand waters to help us prioritise improvements to charts and navigation information.

This hydrographic risk assessment allows the Vanuatu Government, with the support of regional charting authorities, to come to a conclusion about the nature and scope of chart improvement surveys in Vanuatu. It provides recommendations and conclusions to assist decision makers to prioritise hydrographic surveys in Vanuatu for the provision of accurate and adequate nautical charts to meet the needs of contemporary shipping.

This report details the hydrographic risk assessment of the waters around Tokelau, based on the Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) Hydrographic Risk Assessment Methodology as published in Report Number 15NZ322 Issue 031. The inability to conduct an in-country visit limited the data collection to desktop research only. Accordingly, no numerical assessment has been made and the risk observations are based on ship traffic patterns and existing charts.

Annual Notices to Mariners are standing notices that are issued each year in the New Zealand Nautical Almanac. Changes to Annual Notices are notified through the fortnightly edition of Notices to Mariners.
