Anyone can make a place name proposal. The requirements for a name proposal differ depending on the feature or place you want to name. The New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (NZGB) considers proposals and submissions against its naming rules, criteria, standards, guidelines and policies.
Name proposal deadlines
NZGB hui and deadlines in 2019 for making place name proposals are:
- Regular hui: 11 April 2019, deadline 14 February 2019
- Treaty of Waitangi focussed hui: 20 June 2019 (date to be confirmed), deadline 26 April 2019
- Regular hui: 18 October 2019, deadline 23 August 2019
Proposals received after the deadline that meet minimum requirements will be processed at the next NZGB hui.
