Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), the New Zealand Hydrographic Authority (NZHA) presents the second edition of New Zealand’s long-term national hydrographic survey plan – HYPLAN.

As a contracting government to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), New Zealand has an obligation to arrange to collect and compile hydrographic data, and to publish, disseminate and update all nautical information necessary for safe navigation (SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 9).

Summary of findings:

Guidance prepared by the Surveyor-General to assist applicant groups to prepare maps that meet the requirements of s109(4)(a) of the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011.

Including details of the Earth’s orbit, solar and lunar eclipses, times when the Moon is closest and furthest from Earth (lunar perigee and apogee), phases of the Moon and planet visibility.

This hydrographic risk assessment allows the Tongan Government, with the support of regional charting authorities, to come to a conclusion about the nature and scope of chart improvement surveys in Tonga. It provides recommendations and conclusions to assist decision makers to prioritise hydrographic surveys in Tonga. These are based on the needs of contemporary shipping for the provision of accurate and adequate nautical charts.
