The demolition of the former Masterton Hospital is now complete.

Tokanui is part of 1,194 hectares of Māori land that was taken under the Public Works Act in 1910 to build the hospital.

Tokanui was transferred from the Ministry of Justice, along with the other sites in the Treaty Landbank, to us in 2016.

We completed the investigation and planning stage of the demolition in November 2024. This stage included refining our options for demolition and deciding which one to move forward with – taking into account costs, environmental impacts and iwi aspirations.
