Many New Zealand lakebeds and riverbeds are Crown property and are managed by Toitū Te Whenua on behalf of the Commissioner of Crown Lands.

Toitū Te Whenua is the lead government agency responsible for the management of the beds of Lake Wakatipu and Kawarau River including pest control. Toitū Te Whenua represents the Crown as owner of the lake and river beds under the Land Act 1948.
