What was proposed?

The proposal was to alter the recorded name of a locality south of Eketāhuna, north Wairarapa from Waiwaka to Wī Wāka as an official name.

Outcome

No change to current name

On 21 July 2026 the Minister for Land Information accepted the Board’s decision to decline the proposal. Waiwaka remains the unofficial recorded name of the locality.

Report

At its hui on 15 September 2025 the Board considered this report on the proposal. The proposal is notified for one month so that the public can make submissions supporting or objecting to the proposed name.

At its hui on 30 April 2026 the Board considered this submissions report, which is updated with the Board’s decision. Because the Board didn’t agree with the objecting submissions it received, it requested the Minister for Land Information to make the final determination.
