Place naming

Consultation is open for two months on a proposal to name a peak in Tararua Forest Park after the late Shaun Barnett.

The proposed name, Barnett Peak, was submitted to Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa New Zealand Geographic Board by a fellow backcountry enthusiast and member of the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand (FMC). The proposal recognises Mr Barnett's lifelong contribution to New Zealand’s backcountry recreation, conservation and outdoor community.

As an avid tramper, photographer, writer and advocate for the backcountry, Mr Barnett edited FMC’s Backcountry magazine for 10 years and served on the New Zealand Geographic Board as FMC’s representative. He visited more than 800 backcountry huts and authored several books on tramping and outdoor recreation in New Zealand.

The Board accepted the proposal in recognition of Mr Barnett's significant contribution and his strong connection to the Tararua Range. The unnamed 1,513-metre peak is located about 400 metres south-east of Bannister and is one of the 15 Tararua peaks over 1,500 metres.

Consultation inviting submissions for or against the proposal closes on Tuesday 6 October 2026.
