Reasons for decision

The Commissioner has determined there are benefits of planting trees (natives) within the area as requested and is an appropriate use of the land. The tree species as recommended in the guidelines for tree planting on Coronet Peak are considered the most appropriate for this locality. There are two archaeological sites known to exist within the area proposed for planting therefore contacting Pouhere Taonga, Heritage New Zealand (HNZ) of the activities proposed within this area will ensure any requirements that HNZ may have will be meet.

Conditions of decision

Consent is granted for planting native plants, subject to the following conditions:

  1. That the applicant contact HNZ prior to any work commencing and obtains any advice or necessary consents, if required.
  2. Planting is restricted to the use of hand-held tools.
  3. The lessee is to check and obtain any necessary consents required from the Queenstown Lakes District Council, if required.
  4. Follow the ‘Guidelines for tree planting on Coronet Peak’ in relation to:
    • Suitable species for planting; and
    • Appropriate eco sourcing of native plant species; and
    • Appropriate site preparation and maintenance regime.

The Crown Pastoral Land Act 1998 provides that permission to undertake the activity may still be needed under other enactments.
