What was proposed?
The proposal was to alter Hesse Glacier to Hess Glacier and make it the official name of the glacier southeast of Marion Tower and south of Snowdrift Range, approximately 50km northwest of Wānaka.
Outcome
The Minister for Land information rejected the proposal on 13 November 2025. The official name of the glacier remains Hesse Glacier.
Report
At its hui on 15 October 2024 the Board considered this report on the proposal. The proposal is notified for two months so that the public can make submissions supporting or objecting to the proposed name.
At its hui on 31 March 2025 the Board deferred its decisions on the submissions for further advice.
At its hui on 15 September 2025 the Board considered this submissions report, which is updated with the Board’s decisions. Because the Board didn’t agree with the objecting submissions received, it requested the Minister for Land Information to make the final determinations.
