Landonline outage
Landonline suffered a major system outage on Tuesday 20 May resulting in both customers and staff being unable to access the system for virtually the entire day.
A database upgrade on Saturday 17 May is believed to be the underlying cause of the outage. The upgrade proved problematic and was reversed on Sunday 18 May. However, it was not until Tuesday 20 May that significant problems emerged that led to the outage. Stabilising the platform until we felt it was safe to re-open for customers took most of the day. The majority of our customers were able to resume processing with normal levels of service from Wednesday 21 May.
We are undertaking remedial work to enable the small number of dealings that were in progress during the outage to continue.
Application releases were paused while the platform’s stability was being confirmed. We have now recommenced regular application releases and are continuing to roll out access to the Plan Generation pilot.
We regret the inconvenience to customers and fully appreciate your understanding and patience as we worked through the resulting issues from the outage. Overall outages of Landonline are rare and we are comfortable that the system is fully stable and operating as normal.
A full post-incident review is being undertaken to help ensure that such outages do not recur and we will fully debrief our key stakeholders when that is complete.
For customers of the LINZ Data Services regular publication of the Landonline datasets resumes this weekend on 14 June.
Latest productivity survey results
We recently completed a New Landonline Benefits survey for Dealings, Web Search and Territorial Authorities. This has been a regular survey conducted throughout the initial phases of New Landonline leading up to Legacy switch off.
This survey helps review productivity gains, customer satisfaction and areas for future focused improvement.
Some key results:
- 92% of respondents said they are just as, or more productive using New Landonline compared to legacy.
- 45% of respondents indicated a productivity increase above 20% when using New Landonline, compared to Legacy.
After the Plan Generation release, we’ll also gather further feedback from surveyors. Then we’ll do a wrap up of this first phase of New Landonline development, “Horizon One.”
This will be the last of the productivity surveys related to the New Landonline benefits business case. We will seek your feedback in other ways as we keep improving New Landonline with regular enhancements as we keep it “evergreen”.
Thanks to everyone for their feedback.
Don’t forget to renew your practising certificate
Another reminder to lawyers and conveyancing practitioners to renew your practising certificate by midnight 30 June.
From 1 July, only lawyers and conveyancing practitioners who hold a current practising certificate are authorised to certify and sign electronic transactions in Landonline in accordance with s28 of the Land Transfer Act 2017.
For more information about how to renew your practising certificate see:

Landonline – Survey - Plan Generation pilot
This week we recommenced the Plan Generation pilot with the Survey Working Group. We will then progressively roll out access to pilot users. Due to the recent issues experienced by all Landonline users the New Plan Generation open release has been delayed.
Over the last few weeks, the team have continued to work on the application improving performance and adding further functionality.
We hope to make new Plan Generation available to all surveyors soon.
After the full release of New Plan Generation, we will then look to confirm a date for switching off Legacy Landonline.
Digitally Visualised Survey Plans – Engagement Feedback Summary now available
In late 2024, we asked for feedback on a proposal to modernise the generation, view and use of survey and title plans by replacing the current plans with a digitally visualised version.
We received 61 submissions from professional bodies, survey firms, individual lawyers, conveyancers, surveyors, and people connected to these professions.
While most submitters were in support of the proposals, a significant proportion of surveyors expressed various concerns.
Thanks to this wide range of responses, we now have a clearer view of the work that needs to be done to support the implementation of this initiative and the substantial impact it will have on the users of cadastral survey information.
LINZ will continue to work in close partnership with our stakeholders to ensure the services and products generated from a digital cadastral survey dataset meet the needs of users and the cadastral survey system.
Thank you for your patience as we analysed this feedback. The Engagement Feedback Summary report, which includes the Surveyor-General’s response and next steps, is now available on the website for you to read:
