Entrepreneurs with bold ideas that support local communities and boost tourism are invited to express their interest in leasing one of four sites on Crown land around Lake Dunstan.

The sites – Lion’s Lookout, Devil’s Creek, Rocky Point and Jacksons – are managed by Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).

LINZ today launched an expression of interest process, which closes on Friday 10 October.

LINZ Head of Crown Property Sonya Wikitera says the greenfield sites offer a rare opportunity to create something special in a high-demand, high-visibility location.

“We’re looking for innovative businesses that complement the existing offerings in the area – ventures that encourage people to stay longer, explore more, and connect with the unique character of Lake Dunstan,” says Wikitera.

With tourism numbers on the rise, Wikitera says the timing couldn’t be better.

“These sites are a blank canvas. Whether it’s an outdoor cinema, a water activities hub, glamping, or an outdoor education centre – the possibilities are endless.”

Wikitera says there is a list of criteria LINZ will consider when assessing expressions of interest.

The criteria include community benefit, tourism value, commercial uniqueness, environmental impact and recognition of local culture.

“We’re excited to see ideas that bring vibrancy to the area and deliver lasting value for both locals and visitors,” says Wikitera.

Depending on the activity type, consent may also be needed from local authorities.
