Vehicle access changes planned for Lowburn to support trail user safety

Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) is making changes to vehicle access at Lowburn to help improve safety for the multi users of the popular Lake Dunstan Trail and surrounding recreation area.

The secondary access point from State Highway 6 into the Lowburn freedom camping area will be closed, with fencing installed to prevent vehicle access through the entrance. Bollards will also be installed at key points within the multiuser area near the cycleway.  

Visitors will continue to be able to access the area via the main entrance through the freedom camping and boat ramp area.

LINZ says the change is intended to create clearer traffic movements and reduce potential conflicts between vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

LINZ Leader Project Delivery Sarah Thompson says Lowburn has become an increasingly popular destination for both locals and visitors.

"The Lake Dunstan Trail is one of Central Otago's most-loved recreation assets and attracts thousands of cyclists and walkers each year.

"At the same time, the Lowburn area is used by campers, boat users, and other visitors. As the area has grown in popularity, we've identified an opportunity to improve safety by creating clearer and more predictable vehicle access arrangements.

"Closing the secondary entrance will help reduce vehicle movements across areas used by trail users while maintaining public access via the main entrance."

The change follows LINZ's ongoing management of the land to balance recreation opportunities, public access and visitor safety.

"We know access changes can be noticeable for people who regularly use the area, and we appreciate the community's understanding as we make these improvements," says Thompson

"Our goal is to help ensure Lowburn remains a safe and enjoyable place for everyone, whether they're cycling the trail, launching a boat, camping or simply enjoying the lake."

The main access route into the Lowburn freedom camping and boat ramp area will remain open.

LINZ has also been busy upgrading and installing new toilets at the Lowburn boat ramp, Jacksons Inlet, Bendigo Freedom Camping site and Bannockburn Inlet.
