Consultation is now open for two months on a proposal to name an unnamed bay in Napier, Breakwater Bay.
The bay lies next to the Port of Napier and is a popular swimming spot for locals and visitors, valued for its relatively sheltered and safe conditions.
The name was proposed to Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa New Zealand Geographic Board by a member of the Napier community, who noted that the lack of an official name can make it difficult to describe the location. Establishing an official name could also assist emergency services if needed.
Consultation closes 10 August 2026.
