Safety of life

3DCM data will be used to update nautical charts for maritime safety, a core part of LINZ’s obligations under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).

The following safety benefits have been identified.

  • Reduced risk of coastal hazards causing injury and loss of life e.g. as a result of more accurate evacuation advice in the event of tsunami.
  • Improved civil defence resilience; reduced risk of damage to ‘engineering lifelines’ – roads, rail, water pipes, electricity transmission lines.
  • Reduced risk of near-shore hazards for:
    • recreational vessels
    • shipping if the usual routes are unavailable or denied due to a maritime incident
    • coastal shipping route(s) established in the aftermath of a weather event (for example the blue highway established to support the East Coast of New Zealand's North Island after Cyclone Gabrielle).
