Kia ora koutou

It’s almost summer and the end of the year is fast approaching! With people heading off on holiday, December’s Pānui and overseas investment decision summaries will be published early, on Thursday 18 December. January’s Pānui will be published at the end of the month as usual, on 29 January 2026.

A reminder that the New Zealand government shutdown period means that assessment days under the Overseas Investment Act stop between 25 December and 15 January.

We recommend getting in touch with the team if you have an application requiring a decision during the summer holiday period, or if your application will require a national interest assessment.

Read on for a refresher on Residential Land Statements, our updated digital dashboards – a useful source for data and trends relating to overseas investment in New Zealand – and for October’s decision summaries.

Are you keeping Residential Land Statements?

Lawyers and conveyancers advising on residential property transactions must obtain and retain Residential Land Statements (RSLs). Clients purchasing residential land must complete the prescribed form and provide it before you lodge a transfer instrument under the Land Transfer Act 2017.

Residential Land Statement form

Under section 51A of the Overseas Investment Act 2005, buyers must state whether they require consent under the Act and, if so, confirm compliance.

Section 51C(1) of the Act prohibits lodging an instrument recording an acquisition of residential land without an RSL. You must also take reasonable steps to retain RSLs for 7 years. Breaches can incur civil penalties of up to $20,000 per offence.

Refreshed digital dashboards

The latest data on approved overseas investment consents is now available on our interactive dashboards.

The visual dashboards present data current up to 30 September 2025, providing a big-picture view of the decision summaries we publicly release each month. The dashboards can be filtered according to such things as decision pathways and regions, and are presented in both graph and map form.
