Consultation is open for two months on a proposal to name an unnamed stream in Tauranga, Kākahu-pekepeke.
The proposal was made to Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa New Zealand Geographic Board by Tauranga City Council.
The stream is in the suburb of Otūmoetai and partially runs through a stormwater culvert. The buried section will be daylighted as part of the Carlton Street Reserve stormwater replacement works.
The name was gifted by mana whenua Ngāi Tamarāwaho. For generations they had used the stream and its springs for drinking water, bathing and clothes washing. The name, Kākahu-pekepeke is taken from the whakataukī (proverb) that likens the moving of clothes from one spring to another to the moving of a kākahu (cloak) from one whānau to another.
Consultation closes 10 August 2026
