Kia ora koutou

Welcome to Pānui for May 2026.

As you may have seen, the Government has appointed a new Minister for Land Information, Hon. Mike Butterick. Minister Butterick is also Associate Minister of Agriculture and former member of the Primary Production Select Committee. The Overseas Investment team is looking forward to supporting Minister Butterick in his new role.

You can read more about the Minister on the Parliament website:

A steady stream of applications to buy or build houses worth more than $5 million have been received from qualifying investor visa holders wanting to buy property in New Zealand. There has been regular interest in how many applications are being received, where the investors are coming from and what parts of the country they are buying in.

We have now moved to publishing this information on our website as part of our regular data publication. We plan to update the figures weekly initially but will review the frequency as the pathway becomes more established.

Penalties for serious breaches of the Overseas Investment Act

Illegally buying sensitive land and attempting to evade the Overseas Investment Act has resulted in combined penalties of $440,000 for two businessmen.

The case involved an Australian citizen buying sensitive land with cryptocurrency using a New Zealand-based company fronted by a New Zealander to conceal their ownership. This breached the Overseas Investment Act’s strict ‘associate’ rules.

There is no tolerance for attempting to evade the law and, as this case demonstrates, LINZ will take firm enforcement action if offending of this nature is detected.

You can read more about this case and read the High Court’s judgment in our new section:
