Commanders at sea could tip the balance between defeat and victory, which often meant the difference between life and death for the soldiers on shore.

Throughout WW1, naval commanders and sailors fought and died as both sides vied for supremacy and control of the open seas. This deadly conflict is commemorated both through New Zealand’s proud naval tradition, and through the naming of New Zealand places and features some of WWI’s naval commanders.
