Background

The Applicant wishes to acquire approximately 112.41 hectares of land located at 1261 and 1347 Rakaia Highway, Chertsey, Mid Canterbury (the Land) and associated farming assets located on the Land.

The Land is currently operated as a broiler chicken farm. Broiler chickens are chickens farmed for their flesh, rather than their eggs.

The Applicant intends to build new infrastructure (chicken sheds), which will significantly increase the productive capacity of the farm.

The Investment is likely to result in economic benefits arising directly and indirectly from the construction of the sheds. The Applicant’s plans would result in:

  • additional investment for development purposes;
  • six additional FTE positions;
  • increased productivity;
  • a more reliable supply of primary products; and
  • it would allow the Applicant to operate at scale, with standardised practices and a common corporate management.

Taking into account the size and characteristics of the Land, the Ministers consider that the Investors are suitable persons to invest in New Zealand and the overseas investment is likely to benefit New Zealand.
