Geoid transformation grids

Geoid transformation grids are used to convert heights between coordinate systems, such from the historic Local Vertical Datums (LVD) to New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 (NZGD2000). This page includes links to geoid transformation grids used in New Zealand.

See our Medium blog for more information on how to use geoid transformation grids to reproject point clouds:

New Zealand Geoid 2016

New Zealand Vertical Datum 2016 (NZVD2016) is the authoritative height datum for New Zealand, based on New Zealand Geoid 2016 (NZGeoid2016).

The authoritative .sid (Sideris grid format) files for NZGeoid2016, as described in the EPSG Geodetic Parameter Registry, can be downloaded as a zip file:

The data values are: nrow, ncolumn, latitude, longitude, delta-latitude (minutes), and delta-longitude(minutes), and the first data value refers to the NW corner of the grid.

Data relating to NZVD2016, including NZGeoid2016 and the Local Vertical Datum relationship grids, are also available in multiple raster formats from the LINZ Data Service.
