Canterbury earthquakes

Information relating to the Canterbury earthquakes for cadastral surveyors, property professionals and property owners in the Canterbury region

The Canterbury earthquake sequence that began in September 2010 caused significant land movement that affected property boundaries and the survey control network throughout the region. Parliament passed the Canterbury Property Boundaries & Related Matters Act in 2016 to provide certainty for surveying and ownership of properties in greater Christchurch. LINZ also carried out a programme to reinstate the survey control network and update spatial data to take the land movement into account.
