Welcome to the September edition of Landwrap. At the end of this month, we will reach a major milestone.
On 30th September 2025, we plan to switch off Legacy Landonline for survey users, the last remaining external users on the system. From then onwards you will see only references to Landonline, it will no longer be New Landonline!
If you have any questions, please contact us at Landonlinefeedback@linz.govt.nz
Instruments under the Crown Minerals Act 1991
The Crown Minerals Amendment Act 2025 was enacted on 5 August 2025 bringing changes to the Crown Minerals Act 1991 (CMA).
Section 83 of the CMA has been amended by inserting sections 83(4) and (5). On the expiry of an access arrangement under section 83(1), the permit holder or applicant for a permit must lodge with LINZ a notice that the access arrangement has expired.
A new section 88 has been inserted, requiring a permit holder to notify LINZ when a permit expires if the permit was granted before 21 August 2003 and was a permit other than in respect of petroleum.
Two new instrument types have been added to Landonline for notices under section 83(4) and section 88(1).
Sections 39(8) and 40(9) of the CMA have been replaced, requiring revocations and surrenders of permits to be lodged with LINZ only in respect of permits, other than permits in respect of petroleum, granted before 21 August 2003.
For further guidance read our Crown Minerals Act 1991 page.
Updates to the Unit Titles Act 2010 Guideline 2024
The Registrar-General of Land has updated the Unit Titles Act 2010 Guideline 2024.
Various clauses have been updated in relation to standard and layered unit title developments, including the relationship of existing easements and covenants affecting base land or subdivided units to common property or subsidiary units, and staged standard developments and staged layered developments.
Clause 3.2.2 and 3.3.2 have deleted reference to a certificate under s32(2)(b) of the Unit Titles Act 2010 by a registered valuer, which is not relevant for second and later stage or complete unit staged developments.
You can see the details of these changes on page 3 of the guideline.

Landonline dealings updates
Over the past few weeks, small enhancements have been rolled out to Dealings in response to feedback.
Instrument descriptor – This is a completely new function which allows you to add an additional reference or nickname to the instrument. It was created following feedback from users that being able to differentiate between multiple easement instruments would be helpful. This reference is viewable between firms, if the dealing is multi-firm, and does not form part of the official instrument.
Bank Client Reference – Following on from initial development of the Prepare Mortgage screen and the Submit function, we have received feedback informing us that having the bank client reference on the prepare mortgage page would be better for users. This work has recently been completed, and the bank client reference is now required to be entered on the ‘prepare mortgage’ page. If edits are required following signing of the instrument, this can be done at ‘submit’ still.
Notice of Claim – We have recently introduced a new field to Notice of Claim which allows you to enter the spouse/civil union/de facto partner name into its own field if you have a situation where the claimant is not in a direct relationship with the registered owners. You will still need to explain the link between the claimant, the spouse/partner and the registered owner(s).
New Landonline – Plan Generation
Plan Generation was released to Surveyors in New Landonline on July 30th.
We are pleased to report that since then, around 90% of Plan Generation usage has been on the new functionality.
If you haven’t yet used new Plan Generation, we encourage you to start using it now. Please ensure you read Important information for transitioning to new Plan Generation
Legacy switch off
On 30th September 2025, we plan to switch off Legacy Landonline for all survey users meaning you will only need to use New Landonline.
